Kodak was named after the famous camera company Kodak Eastman
You might think that Kodak sounds quite familiar to you or you might have heard the name before. You might even relate it to the famous Eastman Kodak film and camera business which was quite known in the photography world for decades. You might be wondering that how a region like this has such a name? So here is something to answer your curiosity.
In 1892 the local postmaster, Harvey Underwood, came across to this unique Kodak brand of camera. Being an astute individual, Underwood chose this was a name easy to remember as well as easy to spell. He then wrote to the founder of the Eastman Kodak organization, George Eastman asking his permission to use the word Kodak to name his village as well as the post office he manages. Overwhelmed by the request Mr. Eastman conceded consent to utilize the name and the rest is history.
While the photographic procedure that bears the namesake of Mr. Eastman has changed drastically in the recent years with the introduction of digital photography this township will forever be known with the same name which reflects his entrepreneurial spirit and creativity.
The Kodak community is saturated with the social history of the district. The local claims that this fertile land as the part of the nation. But later in time, French, Spanish, and English pioneers started battling over the rights to this land for several centuries. In fact, the civil war was descended on this peaceful region of Kodak.
Amid the War Between the States, various colorful names were given to the region. One such is “Dumplin Valley.” This valley was so named when Union troops stayed outdoors on their long walk to the skirmish of Chattanooga. It was amid this season of scarce food when a small group of warriors stopped next to a mountain stream to set up a basic feast of dumplings and stock. As the feast cooked, one extremely energized and awkward trooper unintentionally thumped the pot of bubbling dumplings into the stream. The disappointed and starving cook was heard to shout, “There go my dumplings down the river!” Since that occasion, the rivulet and the valley through which it streams have conveyed the “dumplin” name. And the place got its name in the funniest yet interesting manner.
